Hi folks, I need help with this issue, I've been googling for hours and can't seem to find anything relating to it (as seems to be the case with a lot of win98 issues). Going a bit crazy. I am running Windows 98 under VMWare and have my joystick plugged into a USB 3.0 plug. When I run the Sidewinder install CD, during the step where it asks me to plug the joystick into a USB I get an error message: 'Setup is unable to detect whether the controller is connected' I follow the setup instructions, install the win98 drivers, everything but I always get the message and then It also doesn't appear in Gaming Options in the Controllers tab.
Once I had even left it plugged in before step 2 of the setup and I saw the stick center and the resistance was there but it still gave me the message. I have no experience with the particular scenario you are attempting, but I have an idea. Dynamode 11n Usb Adapter Driver Download there. Chances are the joystick is attempting to connect to the USB3 or USB2 controller rather than the USB1 controller. First, you need to be sure that you have disabled USB3.0 support to the VM itself, as no USB3.0 drivers exist for Windows 98. Second, it appears you do not have a driver installed for USB2.0 under 98SE. These do exist; download and install to your Windows 98 VM (BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!) and try again.
(Or, alternately disable USB2 support to the VM as well and let the system revert to USB1 only.) Then try to install your joystick again. Let us know what happens. I did try to revert back to USB 1.1 but had the same problem. However I had been looking for drivers for that damned PCI Universal Serial Bus with the yellow bang so I will definitely try this today.
I'll keep you posted. I just tried installing the.exe you linked but after restart the PCI USB in Device Manager still has a yellow bang. I followed the instructions I'm pretty sure. I don't have drivers for flash drives as far as I can tell 2.
I don't have USB 2.0 drivers (that seems to be part of the pb in the first place 3. What unknown devices? I did that 5. After reboot windows did install the drivers but the PCI USB is unchanged.
You did remove the 'PCI USB' device that has the Yellow Exclamation Mark from your system with the Device Manager BEFORE you installed NUSB, correct? You need to remove ALL USB devices and ALL 'Other devices' with a Yellow Question Mark before you run the.EXE and then when you reboot a driver should have been installed for the USB2 controller.
NUSB contains both drivers for Storage Devices and a USB 2.0 controller driver. If it did not work in this case, then something is 'abnormal' about your 'PCI USB' device - either it does not behave like most USB2 controllers or it is in fact the USB3 controller being detected. What are the specs of the hardware you are using; both your real hardware and the hardware being emulated by VMware? Thanks for the clarification. I've re-installed the file and now I don't have an issue with PCI USB which is a big step forward so thank you!
