If you're new to the series, then it's a strong movie on its own right. I loved the first two movies and given that this is the third installment following two very strong films - I feel like they were successful with the storytelling. I was expecting this movie to have nothing to do with the first and second movie, but I really appreciated that they tied in plot lines from the previous movies. I have to say that I love Lin Shaye's character - I fell in love with her in the first Insidious and it was really great to see her kick some demon ass.
